Body Mass/Weight

For consistency when a client takes their weight follow the steps below:

  • No shoes
  • Minimal clothing and ideally the same clothing each time
  • Stand still, weight needs to be spread evenly while standing on scales
  • Preferably weighed the same time of day or evening
  • Record in kilograms.

Height

For consistency follow the steps below:

  • No shoes
  • Watch the hair – Hair tied up high will give an incorrect reading
  • Stretch upward while inhaling
  • Measure vertex of client’s head – the vertex is the very top of your head.

Body Measurements

Guidelines for taking girth measurements

  • Use the same assessor
  • Use the same equipment
  • Take the measurement before exercise
  • Encourage the client to remove any bulky clothing
  • Take girth measurements last after all other measurements have been taken
  • Be quick and efficient and conscious of the client’s possible discomfort
  • Measure from the same side each time
  • Ensure the tape measure is level around the client
  • The tape should be firm but not cut in
  • Always hold the tape measure the same way
  • Take notes to ensure future consistency.
