Syllabus

Learn more about theoretical approaches to understand terrorism and compare it with how terrorism and counterterrorism work in practice.

Week 1: Definition and history of terrorism

What is the theory of the waves of terrorism and how can you apply it? Why is it so difficult to find a definition of terrorism? What is the essence of terrorism?

Week 2: Researching terrorism

Compare the different approaches to the research of terrorism. What are the main difficulties? What is the current state of art of the field of terrorism studies?

Week 3: Assumptions on terrorism

Understand how to assess assumptions about terrorism and learn to apply them based on academic research. How can you interpret attacks in the past?

Week 4: Assumptions on counterterrorism

Understand how to assess assumptions about counterterrorism and learn to apply them based on academic research. What lessons were learned?

Week 5: The impact of terrorism and counterterrorismExplore the impact of terrorism and counterterrorism. What can be done to limit that impact? What lessons have been learned and how can they be applied?

Week 6: Trends and developments terrorism and terrorism studies

What are current trends and developments in (counter)terrorism and what to expect in the coming years? What are un- and underresearched topics today and what should be future research agenda of terrorism studies.

This course consists of six modules of video lectures, readings, discussions and tests. In the video lectures you will be asked two types of questions: - Questions designed to help you understand the material - Questions that ask you about your opinion.

The discussion forum is a very important aspect of this course so we encourage everyone to have a look at it and discuss your opinion with others. It is important that you read the community guidelines so you can help maintain a respectful and academic level of debate.

In order to pass the course, there are two types of quizzes that you need to complete: 1. Every module has a quiz that will test you on the material covered in that module. We strongly advise you to watch the video lectures and complete the required readings before proceeding to the quiz. 2. There is a Final Exam at the end of the course. The Final Exam will cover the material of all the six modules including the readings.
