This course will investigate, interpret and evaluate political theories of the state as alternative lenses for understanding emergencies, disasters and intervention into them. Problems posed by emergencies and disasters, and intervention into them, are inextricably linked to broader social, economic and political issues.

Therefore, this course will consider different theoretical perspectives that can shine alternative lights on emergencies and disasters, and which can also suggest new, and possibly more effective, approaches to intervening into these events.

What topics will you cover?

  • Political theories of the state.
  • Alternative perspectives on the relationship between government and stakeholders, interest groups, and communities, and the implications of these relationships for intervening in emergencies and disasters.
  • Alternative perspectives on and explanations for emergencies and disasters.
  • Government versus market-based approaches to emergencies and disasters.
  • Case studies illustrating alternative political theory approaches to emergencies and disasters.
