Skip to 0 minutes and 37 seconds Now, what does that mean? It means that one must be open to and reflective about the reasons one offers in justification of a particular problem. And when one is open and reflective to what is being known, one explains, and one justifies.
Skip to 1 minute and 5 seconds Thereafter, when one uses one’s explanations in justification of a particular understanding, or be it a cultural understanding, what is connected to one’s culture, then one uses that explanation in order to show how one justifies what one has been initiated into. And thirdly, when one shows how one’s justifications– remember, when we used the word “justifications,” we actually talk about the defensible reasons one offers for a particular problem or understanding. Now, when one shows one’s justifications and how it can respond to educational predicaments on the African continent, one does Critical Philosophy of Education.
Skip to 2 minutes and 15 seconds And this particular understanding of philosophy of education thus involves a critique, getting to know the reasons behind the problem, then drawing on one’s own cultural understandings of these problems, and using one’s cultural understandings of these problems to offer defensible reasons that can respond to the educational predicaments on the continent. When one does these actions, one practices Critical Philosophy of Education. Critical of Philosophy of Education relies on critique, on cultural explanations, and on justifications that can be responsive to educational predicaments on the continent.
Critical philosophy of education
Critical African philosophy of education involves three interrelated processes:
Applying critique whereby one is open to and reflective about the reasons (explanations and justifications) one offers;
Using explanations to justify one’s cultural connections; and
Showing how one’s justifications (defensible reasons) can respond to educational predicaments on the African continent.
