Part one, which is the introduction to African Philosophy of Education, and it's entitled towards a framework of thinking. The question is what does this notion of an African Philosophy of Education mean? First of all, if we talk about African thinking and doing, we relate that to an activity of the mind. So you use your cognition to think about African thinking and doing. Without using your mind, you will not have mindful action, but mindless action. So the first understanding of what it means to practice African philosophy of education is to apply your mind.

So African Philosophy of Education is not something which is practiced or done, rather, independent of what it means to do things. So African Philosophy of Education is not only an activity of the mind, but it is also a practice, something which is done. But more poignantly, and more importantly, why do we do African Philosophy of Education? Or why do we do African thinking and doing? We do African thinking and doing because the aim is to achieve some morally worthwhile aim. So morally worthwhile action, coupled with the idea of mind and action and practice is what constitute just action. And this is what we understand by African Philosophy of Education.
Skip to 2 minutes and 32 secondsWhen one uses the activity of the mind, one reflects. And that is, one looks for reasons, and then one thinks about these reasons. And when one reflects, one identifies major problems on the African continent. So your reflection about Africa has to do with identifying major problems on the continent. And these major problems have to be linked to what hamper Africans' ways of being and living. Once we do that, we are in the first process of practicing or doing African Philosophy of Education. So let me recap. Through reflection you identify reasons, you think about these reasons, contemplate. And in the process, you identify major problems on the continent.
Skip to 3 minutes and 38 secondsAnd these problems are those specific problems that seem to curtail Africans as ways of being and living. The second practice in relation to doing African thinking and doing or African Philosophy of Education is that once you have identified the problems, you cannot just say they are problems. You have to validate or justify as to why these problems are what they are. So that will give you some particular way of understanding these problems. Because you have justified it. You have given reasons as to why these problems are what they are. So it is not just a matter of offering reasons, but it is a matter of offering reasons which are justifiable.
Skip to 4 minutes and 35 secondsAnd that's the second aspect of doing African thinking and doing. So first, it's to identify the problem. And second, it will be to justify the problem. Thirdly, once you have justified the problem, then you determine the consequences of these problems for educational experiences. And that's where the idea of education comes in. Once you have identified the problems, validated the problems, justified it, you have to ascertain as to what the consequences of these problems are for education. And, of course, educational experiences or educational encounters. So firstly, again, I do it pedantically, identify the problem. Secondly, justify as to why these problems are what they are by proffering reasons.
