The Big Question

What improves the safety of airway management : in this video, Prof Tim Cook summarises the main technical and non-technical aspects.

What makes airway management safe?

That’s the big question that this course will help you answer. Safety in airway management has greatly improved in recent decades; in this interview with Prof Tim Cook, Consultant Anaesthetist and Intensivist at Royal United Hospitals Bath, and co-editor of the 4th National Audit Project (NAP4) we will hear some of the recent advances that have contributed to these improvements, and also why, unfortunately difficulties still occur.

We would like you to start thinking about this “Big Question”. You will be able to share your ideas later on this week, and we are looking forward to hearing from you!

Organisational preparedness, individual preparedness and situational preparedness are some factors mentioned by Prof Tim Cook. How do these feature in your practice?

In the “See Also” section here below you will find two interesting articles complementing the discussion.

The role of Human Factors and Ergonomics will be the focus of the next activity. Later, in Week 2 of Airway Matters, we will cover some of the other aspects raised by Prof Cook and explore airway equipment such as videolaryngoscopes and high-flow nasal oxygenation.

Next we’ll meet Dr Barry McGuire, the current president of the Difficult Airway Society (DAS), who will tell us about the role of DAS in promoting safety.
