Develop HyFlex teaching strategies to create better online learning

Learning has evolved rapidly in recent years giving rise to the HyFlex approach; an innovative, disruptive, and necessary change in teaching and learning.

On this four week course from the University of Southern Queensland, you’ll explore key approaches to successful online learning and teaching, using current theories about HyFlex approaches to reconceptualise your teaching.

Explore the benefits of different learning modes for Hyflex learning

Throughout this course, you’ll look at current pedagogical thinking around blended, hybrid, and HyFlex approaches to learning, with a view to rethinking and improving online learning opportunities for your students.

You’ll also use your new knowledge in practical tasks to design online modules or units of work that include options for synchronous and asynchronous learning modes supporting different types of interactions.

Learn from the experts at the University of Southern Queensland

The two lead educators on this course, Dr Julie Lindsay and Dr Lisa Jacka, are experts in the field of online learning and education.

With a wealth of experience and knowledge in building online flexible learning experiences, as well as advocating for new educational technologies, they are uniquely positioned to help you utilise HyFlex learning and improve your online teaching.

Syllabus

  • Week 1

Understanding HyFlex online learning and teaching

    • Getting a grip on HyFlex learning

Explore the course structure and start getting context about what HyFlex learning is and where it came from.

    • What problem does HyFlex learning solve?

HyFlex learning is a solution to a learning problem. Learn all about the problem and how HyFlex learning addresses the issues in an innovative (maybe disruptive?) way.

    • Let's talk about learning

Investigate and discuss current approaches to HyFlex learning and teaching.

  • Week 2

Attributes of HyFlex learning and teaching

    • What are the key attributes of HyFlex learning?

Beatty has suggested that HyFlex is underpinned by four principles: Choice, Equivalence, Accessibility and Reusability. In this section, we unpack these and invite you to connect your own context to each of them.

    • Educational technologies and associated pedagogies

Transformative pedagogies are evolved teaching approaches that enhance learning outcomes.

    • Applying educational technologies

Now that we have explored what educational technologies are useful in a HyFlex learning context, we will look at how to apply them.

  • Week 3

Designing and planning for HyFlex learning

    • Overcoming barriers to HyFlex learning and teaching

Identify and explore the transformative power of HyFlex learning, the barriers and enablers for HyFlex, and future pathways.

    • Digital-first design strategies

Compare and review appropriate digital-first design strategies that reconceptualise student engagement within a HyFlex classroom.

    • Planning for HyFlex

Learn how to implement a HyFlex learning plan and define your context and goals.

  • Week 4

    Bringing it all together

    • Implementing HyFlex learning

As we have already discovered, HyFlex learning and teaching means that all students have an equivalent learning experience. This can be a considerable change that requires careful management and implementation.

    • Supporting HyFlex learning

We have looked at how to drive innovation and change and implementation logistics. Now let’s explore in more detail how to support the change you want to see.

    • Taking the next steps

Recap what you have learned in this course and consider future actions to plan and implement HyFlex learning.
