Definition of Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS)
“Refers to coordinated interventions designed to improve and measure the appropriate use of antimicrobial agents by promoting the selection of optimal antibiotic drug regimens including dosing, duration of therapy and route of administration.”

As Dr Oshun explained it is important to prevent the misuse and overuse of antibiotics. Therefore, the goals of an Antimicrobial Stewardship Programme include:

Optimising antimicrobial therapy. This is promoting appropriate use of antimicrobials through the right selection, correct duration and dose and appropriate route of administration.

Reducing treatment related costs. This can be achieved by limiting overuse and inappropriate use and promoting active parenteral to oral switch therapy.

Minimising adverse events.

Decreasing the risk of development of antimicrobial resistance.
