Welcome to week 2 of this course on antimicrobial stewardship in veterinary practice.

In week 1 we considered our role in and responsibility for AMS, reflected on the motivations which underpin our prescribing habits and discussed the real-life challenges to achieving AMS.

This week we explore how adopting an evidence-based approach to prescribing is the cornerstone of AMS in the clinic, alongside monitoring and benchmarking medicines use as the foundation for implementing change. Species-focused case studies share experiences of practical solutions that have helped to make AMS a reality.

By the end of week 2 learners should be able to:

  • Apply the principles of evidence-based veterinary medicine to antimicrobial prescribing.
  • Reflect on their own approach to antimicrobial prescribing in light of best-practice.
  • Evaluate current antimicrobial use and stewardship within their local context through effective monitoring and benchmarking, as part of practice clinical governance.
  • Assess and discuss possible solutions for achieving good antimicrobial stewardship and effective prescribing within their local context and species discipline.

We hope you enjoy this week of the course. Remember to let us know your thoughts on each step in the comments sections and engage with other learners!
