Each week of the course has been developed by specialists in their field. The overall lead for the course is Professor Dilip Nathwani, OBE who is an infectious diseases physician and leads a national stewardship programme in the UK and is chair [2015-2018] of the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (BSAC).

Week 1 Antimicrobial Resistance

Professor Neil Woodford is the head of Antimicrobial Resistance and Healthcare-Associated Infections (AMRHAI), the Public Health England lead for Applied Molecular Bacteriology and is based at Imperial College London.

Dr David Jenkins is a consultant medical microbiologist and infection prevention and control (IPC) doctor at University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL) NHS Trust. Antimicrobial stewardship is an important part of his IPC role; Dr Jenkins is the chair of UHL’s antimicrobial stewardship committee and he works closely with two antimicrobial pharmacist colleagues to ensure optimal antibiotic prescribing in UHL.

Dr Mike Cooper is a consultant microbiologist and infection control doctor and Director of Infection Prevention and Control at Newcross Hospital, UK.

Week 2 Antimicrobial Stewardship

Dr Mark Gilchrist is a Consultant Pharmacist in Infectious Diseases at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, London. He is immediate past chair of the UK Clinical Pharmacy Infection Network, and co chair of BSAC Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy Initiative.

Dr Gavin Barlow trained in infection with a special interest in orthopaedic infection and antimicrobial stewardship. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians, London in 2009, is an Associate Editor for BMC Infectious Diseases, and is an active member of the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (BSAC).

Week 3 Measurement

Mr William Malcolm is a pharmaceutical adviser for NHS National Services Scotland based in Health Protection Scotland and a member of the Scottish Antimicrobial Prescribing Group currently supporting the national programme for surveillance of antimicrobial use in Scotland.

Dr Jacqui Sneddon is the project lead for the multi-professional Scottish Antimicrobial Prescribing Group (SAPG), which leads antimicrobial stewardship in Scotland.

Week 4 Emerging Strategies

Dr Benedikt Huttner is an infection diseases physician in Switzerland where he has also undertaken research into antibiotic stewardship and antimicrobial resistance in the inpatient and outpatient setting.

Dr Jose Ramon Paño Pardo is an Infectious Diseases Specialist in Internal Medicine and is involved in other antimicrobial stewardship activities within SEIMC-GEIH and ESCMID-ESGAP. He is based at the Hospital Clínico Universitario de Zaragoza, Spain.

Week 5 Behaviour Change

Prof Peter Davey is an infectious diseases physician and has 30 years experience of research focused on the outcomes of antimicrobial chemotherapy and the relationships between prescribing and resistance. He is based at the University of Dundee, Scotland.

Dr Esmita Charani is a research pharmacist at the Health Protection Research Unit at Imperial College London and undertaking a PhD in behaviour change interventions in antimicrobial stewardship and the role of mobile health in decision-making in antimicrobial prescribing.

Week 6 Quick wins

Dr Adrian Brink is a clinical microbiologist based at Milpark Hospital, Johannesburg and is co-chair of the South African Antibiotic Stewardship program.

Dr Sujith J Chandy is Professor and Head of Department of Pharmacology at Pushpagiri Institute of Medical Sciences, Thiruvalla, India and researcher at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm. He provides specialist support for antibiotic stewardship, clinical pharmacology and medicines safety at international and national fora.
