Protection
Until now, when thinking or talking about stewardship, we often use terms such as “restricted”, “restrictive” or “restriction” as discussed in Step 2.17 and Step 2.18.
At the UK’s Federation of Infection Societies conference in November 2015, Debra Goff (Pharm.D. FCCP, Infectious Disease Specialist Pharmacist, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Centre) highlighted the negative connotations of such terms and suggested that we should be more positive and think and talk of stewardship in terms of “protecting” antibiotics and promoted the term “antibiotic protection”.
Will “antibiotic protection” help antimicrobial stewardship/management teams to engage more positively? Leave a comment about your thoughts and reply to at least one fellow learner.
