So that means that in both anxiety and depression, we see that some sorts of behaviours can keep those problems going and sometimes make them even worse. So we're going to look at two specific techniques that we use in CBT to help people deal with and reduce behaviours that are not being helpful for them. These two techniques are called behavioural activation and graded exposure.

Welcome to Week 4

Hello and welcome back to the Week 4 of this online course: ‘Understanding Anxiety, Depression and CBT’.

During the last two weeks, we’ve been trying to understand anxiety and depression within a CBT framework. As we’ve seen, this approach highlights how thoughts, feelings (emotions), behaviours and physical sensations interact with each other to maintain these mental health difficulties.

This week we’ll be focusing specifically on the types of unhelpful behaviours that serve to maintain these difficulties, and on how these behaviours are typically addressed within CBT. We’ll start the week by highlighting some of the behaviours typically seen in people with depression, and how these give rise to vicious cycles which are difficult to break. We’ll describe Behavioural Activation (or BA), an intervention designed to help those with depression to better understand and address some of these unhelpful behaviours; we’ll see what BA might look like in practice using a simulated therapy session and hear from a patient who has used BA.

The second half of this week will focus specifically on the types of unhelpful behaviours seen across the anxiety disorders which serve to maintain these difficulties. We’ll look at one technique in further detail, graded exposure, and hear from a therapist about how this technique works.

We’ll also look at what research has told us about the effectiveness of these interventions.
