This week we're going to jump forward in time about 3,000 years to the medieval period. We're going to continue looking at human bones and thinking about the kinds of things we can learn from them-- not just whether or not someone broke their leg, but also what they ate, where they travelled during their life. This week we're going to me Mary Lewis, our expert in human osteology here in the department, and also Rhi Smith, a museum specialist at the University of Reading. Finally, we'll get to meet William Westerby, a virtual teenager.

Welcome to Week 2: the lab

Last week on Archaeology: from Dig to Lab and Beyond, we looked at the dig: the planning, the processes, the techniques and the discoveries. This week, we’ll concentrate on the lab and beyond.

In this video, Duncan outlines what will be covered in Week 2 of the course. The week will focus on human osteology - the study of human remains - and what this can tell us about the life led by apprentices in medieval England. We’ll finish by discussing how our discoveries should be stored and displayed so that future generations can continue to access and learn from them.
