Impact of SMARTFISH

video

Prof. Wu has already introduced SMARTFISH project.

The goal of the project is to develop a high-tech system that, through automated data collection, can optimize fishing efficiency and reduce the impact of pollution; it will also provide fishermen with fisheries regulations.

The University of East Anglia School of Computing Sciences team, as part of the SMARTFISH project, will focus on developing technologies related to image processing. They will use machine learning to analyze images captured by CCTV and handheld devices to help improve fishermen’s fishing efficiency. Also, the research can help provide new fishery resource data to avoid fishing pressure and further ecological damage and therefore, achieve the goal of better fisheries resource management.

The impact of the Project can have great potential.

  • Improve catch efficiency and catch quality.
  • Improve the accuracy and quantity of fish stock assessment data.
  • Reduce unintended fishing mortality and the capture of protected species.
  • Reduce the environmental impact of fisheries.
  • Advance the monitoring and compliance of fishery regulations
  • Ensure that collected data can be used quickly and efficiently for fisheries monitoring, management and assessment purposes.

The development of sustainable and environmentally friendly fisheries through smart technology will provide a good aquaculture environment behind the global economy and promote innovation in the marine industry.
