In this video, Prof. Fan introduces some basic facts about China, with a focus on Shanghai.
China is in East Asia and is the third largest country in the world with a land area of 9.6 million square kilometres and a population of 1.39 billion (2017). China’s GDP in 2017 is 82.71 trillion RMB or US$12.40 trillion, which is the second largest in the world. The GDP per capita is US$9,300.
Shanghai has a land area of 6340 square kilometres and with a population of 24.2 million (2017) is the largest city in China and one of the largest in the world. The city’s GDP is US$19,700 in 2017.
Shanghai has 16 districts, including both urban and rural areas. Chinese (Putonghua or Mandarin) is the medium of instruction for all schools. Shanghai basic education adopts the 5-4-3 system, that is, primary school consists of 5 year/grade levels, secondary school (or junior high school) consists of 4 years, and senior high school consists of 3 years; in almost all other regions of China, it is a 6-3-3 system. In 2012, there were 764 primary schools and 754 general secondary and high schools, with a total student population of 1.3 million.
