Eliciting what students know at the start of a topic is important, but it’s also essential to check how their understanding is developing as you go along. Sometimes you may want to use specific approaches to help with this in ways that actively engage students in the planning process. One such approach would be KWL grids, where you get students to write down what they know at the start, what they want to learn in the coming session, and what they’ve learned at the end of the session.
