Skip to 0 minutes and 4 seconds So, by now you should be reasonably clear about the two broad types of formative questions– those that are primarily designed to cause thinking, and to support learners develop their knowledge and understanding, and those that are primarily designed to help you decide what to do next. You’ll hopefully also be clearer about the particular challenges of writing effective formative questions of either type. During this week, you’ll be exploring, in more detail, the kinds of evidence that formative questions of either kind can produce, depending on the context in which you use them. How, then, to act on the evidence will be the main focus of week five.

The week ahead

In this video Dylan emphasises the significance of two broad types of formative questions namely those that are:

  • primarily to cause thinking and to support learners develop their knowledge and understanding;
  • primarily to help you decide what to do next.

The focus of Week 4 is on the evidence that formative questions of either kind can produce. The course educators will also record responses to your issues in the question and answer session, which is explained in the next step.
