Delve into the basics of cloud computing and AWS services

With an ongoing shift to the cloud, the lack of skilled cloud professionals continues to hinder growth in organisations across all sectors.

On this four-week course, you’ll learn how to get started with AWS and develop essential cloud skills to use to help progress your career.

This practical course will help you master the concepts necessary to become more proficient in identifying the right AWS services based on your business requirements. You’ll also learn the fundamentals of computing and the terminology and concepts related to AWS to gain a solid understanding.

Learn how to make informed decisions about IT solutions

You’ll take a deep dive into the various AWS services including Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, AWS container services, and serverless compute options.

With this knowledge, you’ll be able to confidently make decisions about IT solutions that will benefit your organisation.

Gain practical skills using the AWS Management Console

To help you apply your theoretical knowledge, you’ll take a hands-on approach and build a cloud-based application.

This employee directory application will store images and information about fictional employees and will help you gain practical skills using and navigating the AWS Management Console.

Learn from the experts at Amazon Web Services

Throughout the course, you’ll have access to insightful readings and take part in quizzes to help track your progress.

Learning from the experts at Amazon Web Services, you’ll discover why AWS is the world’s most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud platform.

By the end of the course, you’ll have the skills to confidently work with AWS to help your organisation become more agile and choose smart IT solutions.

Skip to 0 minutes and 1 secondHey everyone. I’m Alana Layton, Cloud Technologists at AWS. In this class, we will focus on the key concepts behind cloud computing and give details and real life examples for a wide variety of AWS services covering compute, networking, storage, databases, security hence more. First things first, we will cover the basics of what the cloud is, the benefits of the cloud, the AWS global infrastructure and Identity and Access Management. This will give you a solid foundation for covering the rest of the more technical concepts contained in the course. Then we will focus in on compute.

Skip to 0 minutes and 41 seconds And for this topic, we will dig into the services, Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, AWS container services like Amazon Elastic Container Service and serverless compute options like AWS Lambda. Then we will discuss networking in AWS using services like Amazon Virtual Private Cloud and other networking technologies used for creating and securing your own private network in AWS. For storage, we’ll explore how and when to use Amazon S3, elastic block storage and others. For databases, we will cover use cases around the many different database offerings AWS has to offer, but with a special focus on Amazon DynamoDB and Amazon Relational Database Service. Then finally, we will discuss monitoring and scaling your application.

Skip to 1 minute and 33 seconds For that, we’ll use Amazon CloudWatch and Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling and Amazon Elastic Load Balancing.

Skip to 1 minute and 42 seconds We aren’t going to focus on theory alone in this course. Instead, we will use a hands-on example through a cloud-based application that we’ll build over the duration of the class piece by piece. The app we will build is an employee directory application that stores images and information about fictional employees in a company. There’s no coding requirement for this course. For all of the examples and demonstrations, we’ll use the AWS Management Console. Though, you will have access to the source code for the hands-on exercises that you’ll carry out in your own AWS account, using the free tier. Along the way, there’ll be quizzes and readings to help make sure you’re on the right track.

Skip to 2 minutes and 25 seconds This course incorporates the use of readings which are just text-based materials to reinforce ideas and dive deeper into topics covered in videos as well as provide background information on concepts we did not cover during the video material. Because of this, I highly suggest you take the time to read all of the readings to further your learning and get the most out of the material.

Skip to 2 minutes and 52 seconds And as we say at Amazon, work hard, have fun, make history. see you there.

Syllabus

  • Week 1

    Getting Started with AWS Cloud

    • Welcome to the Course

An overview of what we'll be looking at in this course.

    • Getting Started with AWS Cloud

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a comprehensive cloud computing platform that includes infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and platform as a service (PaaS) offerings.

    • Security in the AWS Cloud

Using AWS, you will gain the control and confidence you need to securely run your business with the most flexible and secure cloud computing environment available today.

    • AWS Identity and Access Management

AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) provides fine-grained access control across all of AWS. With IAM, you can specify who can access which services and resources, and under which conditions.

    • Week 1 Quiz

Test your knowledge on this weeks concepts.

  • Week 2

    AWS Compute & Networking

    • AWS Compute

Millions of organizations run diverse workloads on the AWS compute platform.

    • AWS Networking

Get the broadest and deepest set of networking and content delivery services in the world with AWS. Run applications with the highest level of reliability, security, and performance in the cloud.
