I am a researcher in molecular biology of infectious diseases and an instructor for the Pathogen Genomes course organised by the Wellcome Genome Campus Advanced Courses and Scientific Conferences. I have worked in molecular biology of infectious diseases since 2007 and I have developed a keen interest in the use of bioinformatic tools to study the the agents that cause neglected tropical diseases. My motivation to lead the development of this online course is to make bioinformatics available to a wider audience so you can also understand and start using these tools to answer your own biological questions.

I have a BSc in Biochemistry from the University of the Republic in Uruguay and a PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Cambridge and the Wellcome Sanger Institute.

Educator and Developer

Christine photo My current area of research is focussed on understanding how resistance to antibiotics emerges and is transferred in bacterial pathogens. I use multiple next generation sequencing techniques including whole genome sequencing (WGS), transcriptomics and a high throughput mutagenesis approach to inactivate genes in the bacterial genome known as Transposon Directed Insertion site Sequencing (TraDIS).

I have a BSc in Biochemistry from Imperial College London, a MSc from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and a PhD from Royal Holloway, University of London.

I am a bioinformatician and an instructor for the Pathogen Genomes course organised by Wellcome Genome Campus Advanced Courses and Scientific Conferences (WGC ACSC). I have worked as the IT Manager for WGC ACSC since 2016, prior to this I worked within the Pathogen Informatics team at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, providing user support, developing software and running bioinformatics analyses for biologists working within the Infection Genomics programme of the institute. As someone who has worked extensively both setting up and teaching face to face bioinformatics courses, I am keen to see these subjects taught to a wider audience.

I have a BSc in Zoology from the University of Leeds and an MSc in Biological Computation from the University of York.

I am a graduate student at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, where I research the virulence and the molecular genetics of bacterial pathogens as part of the Infection Genomics programme. I approach these questions using both laboratory and computational techniques. Prior to working at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, I have a BA in Genetics from Trinity College Dublin, and worked at Boston Children’s Hospital as a research intern.

Educator

Dr. Ulrike Böhme

I work as biocurator for Plasmodium genomes at the Wellcome Sanger Institute in the Pathogen Genomics group. I’m also an instructor for the Working with Protozoan Parasite Database Resources organised by the Wellcome Genome Campus Advanced Courses and Scientific Conferences. In my current research area I have been involved in the bioinformatics analysis of a diverse collection of eukaryotic pathogens. For this I regularly use Artemis and the Artemis Comparison Tool.

I have a MSc and a PhD in Biology from the University of Tübingen.
