The march south

Shortly after the battle, on the 9th September 1650, Cromwell wrote:

I pray you let humanity be exercised towards them [the prisoners]: I am persuaded it will be comely.

Drawing on a number of contemporary sources and images, this video tells the story of the soldiers who were taken prisoner at the battle of Dunbar and marched to Durham Cathedral.

Durham at this time was a small town with only 3,000 inhabitants. With the arrival of the Scottish prisoners captured at Dunbar, its population doubled overnight. Its vast cathedral was no longer in use and Durham Castle had been sold. Across England, cathedrals were being put to different purposes, as we will see in the next step 3.10.
