For a long time, the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry has trained its personnel mostly through formal education and hands-on training. Nevertheless, issues remain with skills in the industry in various parts of the world.
Taking the UK construction sector as an example, a 2016 survey by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) identified that the main constraints cited by large organisations and small and medium-sized enterprises were labour shortages and access to a skilled workforce.
The interviewees highlighted a lack of experience, which contributed to the skill shortage problems. These issues varied in degree from one firm to another. The most fascinating thing is that the majority of these employers were already engaged in training their staff to meet the skill shortage.
It is reported also that the main drivers for training are new legislative or regulatory requirements. However, the introduction of new working practices and the introduction of new technologies and equipment could also have a significant impact as a driver for training. Interestingly, the drivers highlighted key catalysts for training such as health and safety/first aid requirements, legislation/regulations factors and technical/trade-specific skills (CITB 2016).
There is a need for a skills audit to identify clearly the areas of skills shortages which will require training programmes for innovative and progressive fields such as Building Information Modelling (BIM).
