Bioethical Issues and Challenges
Scientific advances being produced by research into gene editing and synthetic biology (discussed in the previous steps) raises many ethical issues. Scientists must consider these issues seriously, which they do via consultation with many different groups of people.
Some scientists have developed their expertise in research ethics, particularly in relation to medical topics, as seen with Prof Tom Shakespeare (pictured below), formerly from the Norwich Medical School at UEA; more details about his current research at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine can be found on his web site. Prof Shakespeare is a frequent contributor to reviews set up by the Nuffield Council for Bioethics.
