I'd like to welcome you to this course entitled Brain and Behavior, Regulating Body Weight and I look forward to the next three weeks of learning about this exciting and important topic. I'm so pleased that you're interested in this course and I wanna give you a bit of a preview of what we'll cover. My focus here and what I wanna share with you is how our body weight is regulated from a biological level. Nearly everyone has ideas about the best ways to go about losing weight or maintaining a healthy body weight.
Skip to 0 minutes and 52 secondsI wanna emphasize that I don't have the answers, as weight loss journeys are different for everyone. And the challenge of losing weight is made greater by figuring out how to not gain it back once you've lost it. What I will do is talk about science, and biology, and genetics. In week one, my goal is to get you thinking about different factors in the environment and things that you learned throughout life that influence what you eat and when you eat. In the second week, we get much more technical. We'll talk about what is going on in your brain and body in responses to hunger and satiety cues, or cues that tell your brain that you've eaten.
Skip to 1 minute and 31 secondsWhen you consume food, hormones are released from all along your digestive tract and they provide signals to your brain about when you've had enough. I'll then provide you with information about how those hormonal signals affect your brain, which is where they need to act if your behaviors are going to be affected by what foods you eat. Finally, we'll talk about genetics and address the common idea of obesity being all in your genes. I hope you enjoy the course and look forward to working with you over the next few weeks.
