Business continuity can be defined as a holistic management approach that safeguards an organisation against disruptive impacts for example a dislocation of a supply chain as a result of an incident overseas whereas crisis management deals with a strategic imperative that could damage the organisation even governments may suffer from the problems of a crisis such as Brexit. A common denominator between business continuity management and crisis management is management. Management that we’re interested in is the incident management capability which allows an organisation to be able to respond to and recover from the types of challenges that it may face.

Skip to 1 minute and 2 seconds Having worked with organisations across the world, I’ve developed a maxim that organisations will not rise to their expectations but fall to their level of preparedness. In this module we’ll examine business continuity and crisis management further. We’ll look at the origins and the history of where these sister disciplines have come from. We’ll look at the principles, the practices and the terminologies that are used in the field of operation. We’ll also examine the conceptual models and theories associated with crisis management.

Introduction to the course

In this video, lead educator Wayne Harrop welcomes you to this Coventry University Online open course.

This course is the first two weeks of the Business Continuity and Crisis Management program, which forms part of the MSc Emergency Management and Resilience online degree at Coventry University, delivered via FutureLearn.

This week you will:

  • Identify the need for business continuity and crisis management

  • Compare the differences between incidents requiring standard responses and those requiring business continuity management and crisis management interventions

  • Explore the six stages of business continuity management

  • Examine black swan events

  • Discover the historical context for the development of business continuity and crisis management

Meet the team

Your lead educator on the course is Leanne Hunt, she is an ex Local Authority emergency planner, with 8 years experience. She has taught for 4 years in Crisis and Disaster Management and has conducted research in disaster recovery in Italy.

Your associate lecturer is Gareth Black, an emergency planning and crisis management practitioner, who will guide you through the course. He is an emergency planning and crisis management practitioner. Gareth has worked with companies all over the world to improve their crisis management capabilities with a particular specialism in the health sector.

The course was developed by Wayne Harrop, who is Assistant Professor and practitioner specialising in crisis management, risk, business continuity, security and resilience.

Checking your progress
