You should now have an idea about the different white blood cells that make up our immune system and understand some of their functions. Hopefully, you have also appreciated why a healthy immune system is so vital for life and what can happen if it is absent or if control breaks down. We would love to hear from you at every step of the course, so please keep using the online comment facilities. Even while we were still preparing the teaching material, several thousand of you who had already enrolled for the course.

So Week 1 covered the critical importance of our immune system and touched on how we can use it to fight disease. Maybe you've had the chance to look at this in more detail. In Week 2 of this course, we will begin to explore cancer and consider the challenge it sets for the immune system. We'll describe what cancer is and how perceptions of it have changed over history. As we discussed in Week 1, the immune system is carefully controlled to prevent destruction of our own cells.
