250th Anniversary in Britain

The 250th anniversary of the Endeavour’s arrival is causing controversy around big budget events in Aotearoa/New Zealand and Australia. But the anniversary of the departure was a quieter affair in Britain.

‘Cook250’ was marked by a series of events, programmes and exhibitions:

The Royal Academy

It was also the 250th anniversary of the founding of the Royal Academy. Their big Summer exhibition was Oceania

British Library

The British Library had an exhibition of Cook’s voyages, a summer programme of lectures, and an accompanying exhibition by Maori photographer Crystal Te Moananui-Squares.

British Museum

Re-imagining Cook at the British Museum takes a look at how Cook has been remembered by different artists.

The National Maritime Museum

‘Pacific Encounters’ gallery opened September 2018.


The BBC aired ‘Oceans Apart’, a series of programmes on art in Oceania.

Cook 250 Festival Whitby

A weekend festival featuring Tall ships.
