We talk about managing our money. And of course, we talk about time management. But what does self-management really mean? In this course, we'll talk about self-management from two perspectives-- how to manage our careers and how to manage our lives. In this first week, we'll hear from some employers about how they define self-management and why they want employees with this skill set. We'll also hear from a range of different professionals about how good self-management skills have contributed to their career stories.

We'll also introduce you to Deacon's own professional practise credentials, which are a unique way for you to reflect on and validate your employability skills in a way that will be recognisable to current and future employers. Then next week, we'll explore practical behaviours and strategies for building better self-management in your career and in your life. One of the strategies we'll look at is goal-setting. So my first challenge to you is think about why you are doing this course and set a realistic goal about your participation. Maybe you've started lots of courses before.

But what does good self-management look like? What self-management skills do you have and how would you go about benchmarking and developing these to benefit your career?
Setting the scene for your learning
When you think about it, there are very few jobs that don’t require self-management.
It’s also one of the most highly regarded employability skills that organisations rely on to achieve their goals and objectives.
Your ability to identify and evidence your self-management skills is critical to gaining employment opportunities, whether in terms of changing jobs, applying for a promotion, re-entering the workforce, gaining access to the resources required to start your own business, or pursuing further education and training.
Developing great self-management skills is not only important for your career; it’s also what enables you to maintain a healthy balance across all your other life commitments and responsibilities.
