Have you ever had a job in which you were able to work in complete isolation?

Even jobs that require individuals to work independently some of the time, usually require collaboration within or beyond the organisation to deliver final products or services. So, teamwork and the ability to work collaboratively are essential skills for almost all occupations.

In the modern workforce, teamwork skills are particularly important, because intensifying global competition has increased the need for more productive work organisation methods, which are often underpinned by teamwork, distribution of management responsibilities and high levels of collaboration to support innovation and continuous improvement (Toner 2011).

How employees perform as a team also has implications for the promotion of healthy relationships, job satisfaction and workflow, which also influence the productivity, innovation and stability of organisations.

According to an AlphaBeta (2016) report, early-career jobs that demand teamwork and associated skills have increased substantially.

Teamwork can be extremely challenging because outcomes are dependent not only on your ability and willingness to contribute, but also on the ability and willingness of others and the compatibility of your approach, skills and knowledge.

For these reasons, it is likely that regardless of how well you collaborate with others, you will have faced a difficult teamwork situation in the past. How we perform in difficult teamwork situations is as – if not more – important than how we perform under ideal situations.
