Often one refers to the process of deep water formation in the North Atlantic as the Thermohaline Circulation, the Great Ocean Conveyor Belt, or more scientifically the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. For an overview of the concepts and a nice visualization you should check out this NASA page: “The Thermohaline Circulation – The Great Ocean Conveyor Belt”.

For an introduction to the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation and a discussion of changes to deep water production in the North Atlantic you should study chapter 3.6.3 from the IPCC report of 2013 (WG1 AR5) “The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation”.
