What are you losing sleep about?

Negative behaviours can sometimes seem so wide ranging and all-encompassing that it’s difficult to know where to start tackling them. You have already considered behaviours which have the biggest impact on learning during Week 1. This exercise will allow you to rank behaviours in order of their severity in terms of their impact on you. Doing so will help you decide if there are any you would like to tackle first and begin the process of thinking of how you will do it. You will return to think about this again in later weeks.

Instructions

Access the table ‘What are you losing sleep about’ in your workbook. On the page below, you will see a list of behaviours that you may see in your day to day work. Place them into the boxes in order of those that upset you or cause you most stress at the top and the ones that affect you least near the bottom.

Behaviours you may see in your day to day work

Fidgeting or fiddling with equipment Bullying
Swinging on chairs Verbal aggression directed at staff
Using mobile devices Personal insults directed at staff
Disturbing other children Lack of engagement
Not having the correct equipment Sneering/’tutting’
Calling out Inappropriate moving around the room
Purposely making noise to gain attention ‘Blanking’/ignoring staff
Not getting on with/refusing work Smirking/laughing at staff
Answering back/arguing or questioning instructions Physical aggression toward other pupils
Swearing Physical aggression towards staff
Verbal aggression toward other pupils Seemingly random, ‘bizarre’ behaviours
Arguing with other pupils ‘Rearranging’ or tipping furniture
Refusal to comply with instructions-saying ‘no’ Disruptively entering the room
Lateness Refusing sanctions
Defacing/destroying work Spitting
Throwing Blatant/nonchalant unacceptable effort

Remember, we are talking about behaviours that most affect the way you feel and your personal wellbeing. These may not necessarily be the ones that cause most disruption or have the biggest impact on learning.
