Skip to 0 minutes and 12 secondsTOM SHAKESPEARE: Welcome to Week 1, where we'll introduce you to the concepts of child development, impairment, and developmental disability. These topics are constantly debated within the disability and health communities, and it's really important that we all understand the fundamental principles underlying these conversations. We'll start the week by hearing from parents of children with developmental disabilities, before we improve our understanding of early child development and developmental disabilities, a broad and often confusing term.

Skip to 0 minutes and 47 secondsHANNAH KUPER: Next, we will consider how developmental disabilities impact both a child and their family. To finish the week, we will begin to link developmental disabilities to the broader disability and global health agenda, paying particular attention to social and rights-based models, such as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Skip to 1 minute and 9 secondsTOM SHAKESPEARE: Please do share your thoughts throughout the week. And don't hesitate to ask questions of the course mentors and your fellow learners. At the end of the week, we'll compile a summary document of key discussion points as we reflect on what we have learned.

Welcome to Week 1

Welcome to Week 1! Now that you have had the chance to find out about the course and your fellow learners, it is time to begin learning about children with developmental disabilities, their health and their wellbeing.

Throughout this week, we will focus on introducing you to the fundamentals of child development, impairment and developmental disabilities.

What will we learn?

In this week’s activities we will:

  • Describe the interaction between child development and developmental disability
  • Explain the differences between impairment and disability
  • Discuss the concept of disability and its contributing factors
  • Link developmental disability to broader disability frameworks and global health objectives

We would love to hear from you throughout this week. Please do share your thoughts and reflections with your fellow learners in the ‘Comments’ section of each step. The course team will join in discussions and answer questions where we can. We will summarise and clarify any key points from these discussions in a supplementary document, provided in Step 1.21 at the end of the week.
