After learning compound finals starting with i and u, let’s have a look at the last compound finals starting with ü. Compound finals starting with ü are üe üɑn ün.

ü at the beginning is read very lightly, and then slides quickly to the main vowel.

• üe, yuè — moon, xué — study
• üɑn, yuan — circle
• ün, yún — cloud

However, there are three special compound finals iu, ui, un. We omit the main vowel o or e in the middle when we write but don’t forget them when you read. For example, jiǔ (jiǒu) alcohol, shuǐ (shuěi), water.
