Introduction to Week 2: Biological and Cultural Diversity

Welcome to the second week of our course on Climate Justice.

This time, we shall discuss the notion of diversity as a response to the lack of opportunities and resources of the populations that are vulnerable to climate change.

Diversity, however, has many levels:

  • individual members of species,
  • biological niches,
  • cultural contexts, and
  • human interventions in the life of other organisms.

We will ask you to take certain philosophical positions, such as

  • anthropocentrism, the belief that humans have priority over all other beings, and
  • biocentrism, the belief that ecological niches must be prioritized in relation to its members.

We will also introduce you to various ways of relating to the environments that eventually contribute to the production of various cultural practices and traditions.

In the end, we shall discuss COMEST’s recommendation for an ethical dialogue among nations in order to resolve the conflict among cultures that endanger the environment, on the one hand, and those that try to enhance it, on the other hand.
