I'm Friedi and my colleague Alexis and I are course coordinators at the CEMUS, the Centre for Environment and Development Studies. We spent some of our time parallel to our studies planning and running interdisciplinary courses regarding sustainability related issues. Daniel is our Director of Studies. CEMUS was founded on a student initiative to promote interdisciplinary research and education for sustainable development. We have looked at different ways to explore the world's most pressing issues for more than 20 years. At CEMUS, the courses bring together experts from both academic and professional fields. The courses are created by students in collaboration with university faculty.

It is a broad research university with many different research topics connected to different parts of the Climate Change Leadership MOOC. The university has over 6,000 employees and over 40,000 students. So before really diving into the course, we just want to say HEJ and let you know that even though this is an online course, it's an online course created by humans for humans. This course might not change the world by itself. What can turn this into something more than a collection of lectures and papers is you. People thinking, reading, writing, discussing, and putting the material into practise.

Welcome to the course, week 1 and meet the team
Welcome to the Climate Change Leadership course and week 1! We at CEMUS, The Centre for Environment and Development Studies and Uppsala University invite you to an educational experience that will both broaden and deepen your understanding of climate change leadership, and give you the opportunity to connect your own experiences to the different topics covered in the course.

Week 1: Putting climate change leadership into context: past and present
During the first week we’ll take stock of the Paris Agreement, learn the basics about climate change impacts and explore the relationship between society and nature from a historical perspective.

Meet the team - lead educators
Alexis Engström is from the northern part of Sweden and works at CEMUS as a course coordinator. He is working with the course Global Environmental History and has previously worked with the course Actors and Strategies for Change - Towards Global Sustainabilities. He started working at CEMUS when finishing his degree as a high school teacher. Alexis is also involved with the university wide development of Active Student Participation - a look at the evolving role of students in higher education, connecting to international movements of students as change agents and students as partners. Jakob Grandin has coordinated interdisciplinary and highly participatory university education at CEMUS for many years and just joined SpaceLab at the University of Bergen as a PhD Fellow. At both places, he has had two main aims: to bring the critical social sciences into the conversation about sustainability, leadership and transformation, and to develop methods for learning and governance that are appropriate for the complexity of current social and environmental challenges. At CEMUS, Jakob has designed courses on sustainable development, globalization, technology and strategies for change. His current research examines how urban climate and energy transformations may be initiated and accelerated, and their effects on justice and power relations. Jakob is an avid hiker and is trying to learn cross-country skiing to extend the outdoors season.
Friederike May is from Potsdam, Germany and also works at CEMUS as a course coordinator. She began working with the 15 credits campus course “Climate Change Leadership - Power, Politics and Culture” in 2014 and while she was taking the joint ‘Sustainable Development’ master’s programme at Uppsala University and The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, SLU. She wrote her master’s thesis on the campus course as well. Have a read here if you are interested! Previously she has studied Business Management at The Berlin School for Economics and Law which gave her a good background knowledge for another course she is coordinating at CEMUS: The Global Economy - Environment, Development and Globalisation. She also recently became an avid diver and through this has developed a keen interest in protecting the oceans and marine life.
Daniel Mossberg is director of studies at CSD/CEMUS and acting programme director at CEMUS. His main focus is the work as director of studies at CEMUS with its student-led undergraduate and master level courses. The work consists of a combination of administration, planning and pedagogical leadership. A big part is working with different people in different contexts, this includes internal training sessions with course coordinators, meetings with course work groups and solving problems that arise. The programme director work is mostly connected to short and long term planning, administrative issues, meetings and the more visionary aspects of CEMUS. His academic background is mainly in the humanities (cultural anthropology, art history, philosophy), social sciences (American studies, pedagogical leadership) and interdisciplinary studies (environment and development studies, sustainability, environmental history).
