Clinical Supervision: Planning Your Professional Development
Reflect on your clinical supervision practice and plan your personal development
This online course will focus on identifying your learning needs as a clinical supervisor or practice educator, and provide advice on creating a personal development plan to address them.
You’ll reflect critically on your own supervisory practice using appropriate frameworks, learn how to evaluate your own teaching activities, and address feedback you receive from the medical students and trainees that you supervise, or through peer observation
The course will also discuss the principles of quality assurance and quality improvement in education, and how these can be applied in your context.
Syllabus
Week 1
How can I become a better educator?
Introduction to the course
This course will look at assessment of learning needs, reflective practice, and professional development of clinical and educational supervisors, practice educators, and other health professionals.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
This activity will look at the role of a clinical supervisor which might include teaching, supervision, curriculum design, delivery and evaluation, leadership, and innovation.
Planning your personal professional development
In this activity we will explore personal development plans and how we can use these to address our learning needs as supervisors or practice educators.
Week 2
Becoming a reflective practitioner
Introduction
This activity will introduce what to expect from Week 2.
Reflection: Making it work in practice
In this activity, we will explore some frameworks that can be used to guide reflective practice.
Types of reflection
In this activity we will look at types of reflection and how they can be used to enhance professional practice.
Week 3
Evaluation and quality improvement of educational activities
Introduction
This activity will introduce what to expect from Week 3.
Quality improvement
We are now going to look at how we can improve the quality of our educational activities, including supervision.
The reflective educator
In this activity we are going to explore how you can progress and develop your own role as an educator. The term ‘educator’ here denotes both tutor and supervisor.
End of course activities
In this activity we will test learning gained from the course, explore your experiences of undertaking the course, and suggest further learning options.
