Key messages

  1. Learning is influenced by several factors which include motivation of the learner, the perceived relevance of a learning opportunity to their learning goals, as well as the educational environment in the workplace. Creating an environment conducive to learning is therefore as important as the actual teaching methods used.

  2. Identify your students’ or trainees’ learning needs early so that you can plan appropriate learning opportunities within the placement for them to achieve these.

  3. Interprofessional education is a good way to learn about and understand the role of various specialties and professions, for example through attending multidisciplinary team meetings.

  4. Encourage students and trainees to take responsibility for their own learning as adult learners.

  5. All clinical service provision can be an excellent opportunity for learning within a supportive learning environment.

  6. Encourage and support trainees to be proactive and well-organised, so that they manage their time efficiently and learn effectively.
