In step 1.13, we learned how you can use SMART action planning to change behaviour. There will be times where you may encounter obstacles which can threaten to derail your efforts in pursuing your compassionate care aims. When such a situation arises, you need to know what to do so that you remain focused on your goal.

Thinking about the possible barriers, obstacles or distractions that might prevent your success and how you might overcome these can help. Research shows that coping plans based on using an if-then condition can help deciding what action to take.

You can construct your own coping plans by simply writing down (1) distractions or barriers that could potentially disrupt you from completing your goals or actions (2) solutions to address each issue (3) an if-then statement so that when the scenario arises you are immediately prompted to take action.
