Skip to 0 minutes and 10 secondsSocial entrepreneurship is a global phenomenon. In this lecture, we focus on the interdependencies between social entrepreneurship and the context in which it is developed. Differences in social enterprises across the globe are reflections of the social economic context. So far, relatively little attention has been paid to the context of these socially enterprising activity and how that context shapes the kind of need, purposes, activity, form, and processes involved in its creation and realization. A global theme underlying the emergence of the social enterprise is the absence of social programs or funding due to poor functioning of the state and markets.

Skip to 1 minute and 5 secondsThe retreat in the developed world or the mere absence in many developing countries of the state as an actor in economic life has created the need to address social problems in the private sector. Budget cuts have created problems to fund social services. The global movement towards privatization and marketization has profoundly influenced private organizations to address the gaps left in the provision of social services. In conclusion, complex institutional characteristics and uncertain changes give rise to a variety of social ventures. Though a modern movement for social enterprise is developing across the globe, there are differences in its appearance, how it is supported and developed. Different forms are path dependent and can be explained by the persistent differences in regional social economic context.
