Skip to 0 minutes and 11 secondsIt's so beautiful. Everyone needs to experience this to realise why it's so important to preserve this ecosystem. But it's such a far cry from the urban landscapes of the UK, so how can people 8,000 kilometers away connect with this habitat? Tim Bryce is the CEO of an international ICT company based in the UK. He's a philanthropist, an ardent environmental campaigner, and an avid traveler. His latest trip was a two-month expedition through South America and he was returning home with a big idea. We're going to bring the rainforests of South America to the UK for people to experience firsthand.
Skip to 0 minutes and 58 secondsWe'll build a vast green house that allows visitors to interact with unfamiliar habitats and see how our actions determine what happens to the ecosystems that are essential to life on earth. This project will be both exceptional and inspirational so we need the right contractor on board to help realise the vision. I've already approached a project manager to oversee this and our architect has been busy creating concept designs. We've found the ideal location and we're in advanced talks to purchase the land, so we need suppliers and contractors on board ASAP. There's no time to waste. It's a huge risk to procure services based on a vision with no foundation.
Skip to 1 minute and 45 secondsLooking at this proposed design there are risks around cost, time and quality. We can't define the contract, or start the tendering process, until we know exactly what we want to build, and the stakeholders who will be involved. To be truly innovative we need to think radically. We can't be risk averse, or tied down with a prescriptive design brief. This project needs to grow organically. Let's get started. How do you think this ambitious project can succeed? Which stakeholders should be involved? And what procurement strategy should the client move forward with? As the project manager how would you feel about taking on such an ambiguous project brief?
Introducing project 2
In this video we meet some of the stakeholders for our second project. They’ve got big but ambiguous ideas at this point. With a project this nebulous, how can you begin to plan?
Both of our projects seem destined for trouble. Can they bring their grand visions to life on time and on budget?
We’ll be following our projects throughout this module, finding out how they are progressing and what influence project management decisions have on construction projects.
