The early history of cryptanalysis

In order to uncover murderous plots, reveal the plans and actions of an enemy in battle, or intercept messages used by terrorists to coordinate their actions, cryptanalysts fight to undo the work of cryptographers.

There have been a number of cryptanalysts throughout history that have pushed the field and had a long-lasting impact. The first of these was Al Kindi, who we will investigate in this activity.

Your task

Investigate the contributions Al Kindi made to cryptanalysis. Which contribution do you think was the most significant and why?

Statistical analysis plays an important part in cryptanalysis. Can you think of a way to make it more difficult to detect letter frequencies?
