Wrapping up the course
Congratulations everyone! You reached the end of our course!
Let us recap the main steps that have been achieved over these three weeks.
During week 1, we went through the current debates on what is the ‘European identity’ and what is ‘European culture’ and what it means to talk about them in the singular or in the plural (cultures, identities). You were able to critically discuss the notion of European identity in its articulation with national identity. You developed a historical perspective on nationalism in Europe to reflect on the challenges that contemporary nationalist ideologies represent today. We shared experiences of European programs fostering cultural diversity and tolerance, like the initiatives of the Council of Europe. You analysed the different dimensions of European cultural diversity, such as gender, ethnicity, language and religion.
During week 2, we introduced the main approaches to cultural heritage in Europe and discussed public use of history. You investigated the way the past is constructed and learned about the institutionalisation of history and heritage. We also discussed the power dynamics behind the construction of European heritage, as well as transnational and cosmopolitan conceptions of heritage. You also got insight into integration of minorities’ heritage and the use of cultural heritage as a tool of intercultural dialogue to engage with societies outside of Europe.
During week 3, we analysed European policies in the media and cultural sector and brought up critical approaches to cultural industries. After this week, you can synthetize the main issues and debates surrounding the notion of cultural industries. You can analyse the geography of creative industries in Europe. We discussed some of the main European programs promoting cultural and creative industries, explained how they emerged and reflected on their future. You got insights on how to promote pluralism on a local scale through artistic programs and on a European scale through the protection of media pluralism.
