Dementia friendly cinema

Here in Newcastle, the Tyneside Cinema currently hosts a series of dementia friendly cinema events - special film screenings with adjustments made to take into account the needs of people living with dementia.

simple adjustments

The day time screenings of some of the world’s most beloved musicals provide a relaxed opportunity for people living with dementia, their families and carers to socialise and enjoy the films together. While the events are open to anyone, they are enhanced to provide an environment more suitable for the needs of people living with dementia:

  • Special large print, and contrast-adjusted signage around the auditorium

  • Increased lighting in the auditorium during the screening

  • Reduced sound levels

  • No adverts or trailers preceding the film

Filmgoers have the freedom to engage with the film how they wish - dancing and singing along to the music or chatting with the fellow audience members.

What’s going on in your area to support people with dementia to live well?
