Skip to 0 minutes and 6 secondsALISON COATES: Hello. I'm Alison Coates. I'm a senior lecturer and programme director of the Bachelor of Nursing at the University of Birmingham. Here at Birmingham, we have proudly taught generations of student nurses about the importance in providing high quality care for all patients, and in particular we recognize the needs of working effectively with older adults who have dementia.

Skip to 0 minutes and 28 secondsNUTMEG HALLETT: Hi. My name is Nutmeg Hallett. I'm a lecturer in mental health nursing and a postgraduate researcher investigating the prevention of behaviors that challenge. For the next three weeks, we'll explore some of the behaviors that can cause problems for the carers of people with dementia and how they can be understood and managed. We'll be focusing on the activities of daily living and exploring how a person-centered approach can help you understand the person you're caring for, and how this will help you provide care in a way that removes or reduces some of the behaviors that you might find challenging. DR.

Skip to 1 minute and 3 secondsALISON COATES: The provision of high quality mental health care is not necessarily about specific interventions. Much of mental health care is about having good interpersonal skills, a supportive attitude, and the ability to look at challenging situations from different perspectives.

Skip to 1 minute and 21 secondsCHRIS WAGSTAFF: My name is Chris Wagstaff. I'm a senior lecturer in mental health nursing. I've worked in the field both clinically and academically for over 25 years. We'll be using a case study of Peter, a resident at a nursing home. Through videos, articles, and your discussions, you will learn about ways of managing behaviors that challenge in a variety of different settings.
