Getting to know each other

Let’s start by getting to know each other a little better. Here is lead educator Chuck Calahan to tell you about himself …

Greetings! I am an Assistant Director of the Purdue University Center for Instructional Excellence where I facilitate Global Learning Faculty and Student Development. Before assuming this new position in 2012, I was a teaching professor in the College of Health and Human Sciences at Purdue University for 12 years. I taught Human Development and Family Science coursework.

I am a Purdue University Diversity Fellow, Service-Learning Fellow and a Member of the Purdue Teaching Academy.

Prior to coming to Purdue in 2000, I was an instructor at Wichita State University. I was a human services administrator and professional for over 25 years.

I have five children, including step-children, and seven grandchildren. I enjoy outdoor activities including wilderness canoe tripping and waterfowling. I completed eight 26.2 mile marathons in the last four decades.

I really look forward to reading your comments and discussions during this course as you begin to develop cultural intelligence.

Now it’s your turn!

You are one of the thousands of learners from all over the world taking part in the course, and we’re sure you all have valuable experience and opinions to share. Some of you have already been getting to know each other in the welcome area before the course started.

So, please take a moment to tell us about yourself. Post a short comment below and answer these three questions:

  • What country are you based in?
  • What do you do for a living?
  • What’s the number one thing you hope to learn over the next few weeks?

Once you’ve posted your comment, spend up to five minutes reading other learners’ comments. Click the ‘Like’ button next to any comments that resonate with your own motivations for joining.

Before you move to the next step, try to find at least three other people who have a similar background or motivation as you or better yet, others very different from you, then click the ‘Follow’ buttons next to their names.
