So I’m going to make a little grid here so that we can add so let’s think about what we could add. Let’s go suffix first, I think here so we could add really simply, just S – covers. Err covering, covered all of these are changing the meaning of plural present tense past tense …coverage. That’s a good one mobile phone coverage have we got in this area. Let’s put some prefixes in what else could we have obvious ones we could have dis - discover, discovering, discovered, discoverage?
Skip to 0 minutes and 42 seconds I’m not sure that’s a real word but it’s one of the nice things about using word matrices is that you can make up words and then ask children what they might mean –so it’s not a real one, but fun to talk about! Okay, so we can also have recover, recovered, recovering, we could uncover uncovered, uncovering, uncovers now, I wonder if we could add any further morphemes prefixes in here. Let’s have a think so, we could have, oh, I know, we could have ‘un’ again so undiscovered - undiscovered treasures - we could have un-recovered…yeah I think that would work. What about seeing if this would work again re-rediscovered rediscovering, yeah that works really well.

How do we teach morphemes for meaning?
When teaching morphemes there are two key questions to ask:
How does the morpheme affect the meaning of the word?
How does the morpheme change the spelling?
In this step we are going to focus on the ways in which we can teach morphemes to answer the first question.
There are two key strategies that can be used as a basis for teaching morphology for meaning and they are morpheme matrices and word families.
