Pass it on
This course might be coming to an end but that doesn’t mean your exploration of how to teach vocabulary has to. There are many things that you can continue with.
• Tell others about this course. We will run it again this year so pass it on and others can sign up to be notified about when it will next start
• Share these ideas across your whole school. To help you do this we have created a Continuing Professional Development package that enables you to lead whole school development in teaching vocabulary.
• Develop your understanding through further reading. We would recommend:
Beck, I., Mckeown, M. G., & Kucan, L. (2013), Bringing Words to Life: Robust Vocabulary Instruction. Guilford Press 2nd edition
Graves, M. F. (2016), The Vocabulary Book: Instruction and Learning 2nd ed, Teachers College Press
Vocabulary Development Reading List compiled by Alex Quigley, particularly the section with links to online articles
• Write a brief action plan detailing what you are going to try out in your classroom and the evidence that demonstrates progress.
• Note the google docs links that contain the 5 reading plagues and continue to develop the lists
• Find out more about our recent Vocabulary research project and our new professional development training package for anyone interested in learning how to better teach vocabulary in a school setting
