While there are many platforms on which to locate your CV, such as CareerBuilder and StepStone, LinkedIn is certainly going to be one of the most well-known. As such, you have a great chance of marketing yourself effectively. The guide below is focussed on LinkedIn but the points can be used with any platform to help you begin to improve your original CV.
- First of all, make sure your LinkedIn profile is complete. You can choose how to organise your sections, so make sure you put at the top of the page the section you want the employers to focus on.
- In the Experience section, add all the work experience you want the recruiters to see. If you have had many jobs, try to be selective – add only the ones you think will show you in the best possible light.
- For each job, list your main tasks and activities, preferably with bullet points. This gives important information about your main strengths and areas of expertise.
- If you have any volunteering experience, make sure you include it in the relevant section.
- Include a photograph, a headline and a profile. You can see the materials on Profile picture and Headline presented in Week 2.
- List your skills. This includes all kinds of transferable and soft skills, as well as any specific skills for your area of experience. Computer skills and foreign languages are also important to mention. Remember, the Skills section is one of your main selling points.
- Endorsements are also a great way to emphasise your abilities. If you don’t have many, you can simply endorse your connections’ skills and you will certainly receive some in return.
- If you have any certificates, additional courses, achievements, awards, publications, projects, etc. make sure you mention them as well.
