Learning to be a good digital leader

To consider the specific skills and competences that digital leaders need to develop, to run and grow their business successfully, you may find it helpful to consider the European e-CF competence framework. This is a shared European Framework for ICT professionals in all industry sectors.

Created by E-skills at the European Commission, the European e-Competence Framework (e-CF) provides a reference of 40 competences as required and applied within the Information and Communication Technology workplace, using a common language for competences, skills and capability levels that can be understood across Europe. The e-CF was created for application by ICT service, user and supply companies. For example, managers and human resources departments, education institutions and training bodies including higher education, market watchers and policy makers, and other organisations in public and private sectors.

This list of e-competences provides a summary of the necessary skills and knowledge for effective digital leadership across multiple job roles, businesses and industries. Building on what we’ve learnt this week about the Three Dimensions of Digital Leadership; we would like you to choose the e-competences that you feel are necessary, to assist digital leaders in each dimension from our model.

Here is a brief reminder of our model:

  1. Formulate business strategy- a planned series of actions for achieving something. Applied to the course it could be a strategy of dealing with new emerging information technologies and their integration into business practices

  2. Business modelling, understanding markets and customers- is the activity of making money (earning profit) by producing or buying and selling goods, or providing services to customers

  3. Effective use of technologies (IT systems, etc…)- the study or use of electronic processes for gathering and storing information and making it available using computers and other electronic gadgets, connected or not connected to Internet

Rather than use the entire list of over 40 e-competences, we’ve selected 20 in this interactive PDF. Please work through the list and select which of the dimensions you think each competence assists. You may decide that there is more than one. In addition to our A-Z glossary, there is another handy glossary at the end of the interactive PDF which includes definitions of each of the competence.
