This video, will introduce a case study about mobile health care application case, through which we use mobile application and cloud computing to improve the service delivery in the hospital. There are a lot of mobile applications in the market, and a lot of systems for the health care. But the current problem is that all the system– a lot of systems and the mobile applications, they only support a single activities in the patient journey. That’s why they cause problem about the information gap between the activities in the patient journey. So in order to try to solve the problem and trying to have a novel solution, so our informatics research centre has been working with a company Sindlo technology in Beijing.
Skip to 0 minutes and 53 seconds So we have established a health informatic research centre to develop an integrated mobile health care application. We have been asking ourselves three questions in order to make it successful. What is the value creating activities in the patient journey, so in the hospital. And the second question is, where is the information gap between the value creating activities? And the third question, which is also the most important one, is how to bridge the gap and maximise the value creating capacities between the activities in the patient journey.
Skip to 1 minute and 30 seconds In order to answer these questions, we have developed an integrated mobile health care application which aim to go through the whole processes of patient and doctors, and also the senior management in the hospital– prehospital, and activities in the hospital, and the activities post the hospital. So we use our cloud computing data server to capture all the data that happen in the hospital, and also trying to integrate and share the data through all the processes among the doctors and the patient, and also the senior management. So the mobile devices on the other hand, for the doctors and patients and senior management, they will get real time information and tell them. They will get also informed to know what to do next.
Skip to 2 minutes and 20 seconds So for example, if you are a patient, if you have got to download the mobile application here, before you get into the hospital, you can check the hospital basic information, what type of services. And then you can also make appointment. And when you get in the hospital, you can also use the mobile app to check you test result and the imaging result, a lot of examination results. So you don’t have to bring a lot of the paper based report in your hand. You can do the online payment, so you can check the waiting list on your mobile phone, getting out of the hospital when they are discharged. So you can get medication reminders through your mobile phone.
Skip to 2 minutes and 59 seconds And also you can keep communicating with your doctors whenever something goes wrong. And also you can give feedback for your services you have received in the hospital. But if you are a doctor and all the information will be integrating in your mobile phone as well, all the information of the patient like test results and the patient record, and everything has been integrated and can be visualised into your mobile phone. Before the doctor has to bring piles of papers through the work round to have communication with the patient. And now what he can do? He can do the work round anywhere he wants. This has dramatically improved the efficiency of the treatment and management processes as well.
Skip to 3 minutes and 43 seconds In the end, we have implemented the mobile health care application in about 40 hospitals in China. So we found that the services has been changed dramatically. The patient length of stay in the hospital has being shortened from 12 days to nine days, which is a big change of the cost as well. It has reduced medical errors because we have digitalised everything. So there has been less duplicated tests and examinations, and there are less unnecessary visits as well. We are also trying to expand it in different areas, not only health care, and also finance. But all in all, so the experience learned is that the value creating is most important for the mobile application development.
Using mobile technology to support a whole patient journey
In this video, Vicky explains how the Informatics Research Centre at the Henley Business School, have created an integrated app together with a company based in Beijing: Sinldo Information Technology (Beijing) Co.,Ltd.
The ageing population in China, with chronic and age-related diseases has become a global issue and exerted heavy burdens on the healthcare system and society. The uneven distribution of caregivers and shortages in critical healthcare workers, are major obstacles to improving disease outcome in China. As an example, a major hospital in China has over 4000 beds, and the total outpatient volume reached 4 million in 2014. More than 3000 patients wait to be admitted each day, and medical personnel experience long-term work overload. With the advancement of wearable health devices, cloud computing, mobile technologies and Internet of Things; mobile health (mHealth) is rapidly developing and shows promise to improve the quality of care, reduce the costs of care, and improve treatment outcomes.
Vicky explains how the app developed with Sinldo, improved the whole healthcare process and therefore service delivery in a hospital. To avoid some of the limitations of existing mobile healthcare apps, the team developing the app asked themselves three questions:
- What are the key healthcare activities within the patient journey?
- Where is the information gap between these activities?
- How do we bridge this gap and maximise care capabilities; creating capacities between the activities and patient journey?

Mobile apps, such as the example in this video, can be viewed as a:
- Disruptive technology enabling boundary-less, cost effective access to customers at a high economy of scale.
- Facilitator for traditional businesses and an incremental way of shaping communication between a customer and a provider (complimentary role of technology).
