Skip to 0 minutes and 1 secondIn this video, we will talk about how digital technology is helping us to work smarter, both in how we work and how people work together. Let's start with how we work smarter. In the future, more and more tasks will be done by humans and machines, together! You might have heard of artificial intelligence, which is sometimes known as machine learning. This refers to machines that can think like people. Video games, for example, have been using AI for a long time. And they've been getting better and better. In some games, the characters will learn your behaviours, respond to you actions, or change what they say to you based on past interactions.

Skip to 0 minutes and 40 secondsNow, some people are uncertain about what will happen to their jobs in the future because of artificial intelligence, or automated machines. But actually machines are likely to become our colleagues. This working together of humans and machines is called augmentation. Because machines can help us to get better at stuff we do well anyway. Like being creative, solving problems, or creating connections with other people. Machines can take over the more boring or repetitive tasks like booking meeting rooms or entering information into spreadsheets. They can also do tasks that need data or logic. That means, our work can become more interesting and creative and we can be more productive.

Skip to 1 minute and 20 secondsJust think about some of the things that machines are now doing for us that we used to have to do ourselves. For example, washing clothes or the dishes. I'm not sure about you, but I happily let the dishwasher do that. Or imagine you had to light a fire every time you wanted a cup of tea, instead of just putting the kettle on. Having the technology allows us to do better things with our time. One example of how technology is helping us to free-up time today is in medicine. Scientists are training machines to be able to recognise certain symptoms, such as eye diseases, to be able to prevent blindness early. This means that more people can be diagnosed faster.

Skip to 1 minute and 56 secondsAnd the human doctor will have more time to actually treat their patients and listen to their concerns with the empathy that a machine could never replace. This is, of course, very positive. But it also means that we need to develop different skills. The doctor in our example now needs to learn how to use the AI programme, how to analyse the data it produces, and how to communicate well with their patients to explain the results to them. Now let's look at how digital helps people to work together in smarter ways. Besides working together with machines, we will also increasingly work with other people, no matter where we are in the world.

Skip to 2 minutes and 32 secondsThis is exciting because it means that together we can develop better solutions and solve more complex problems. Working with people in different countries and contexts can make us think beyond what we already know. Crowdsourcing is an example of that. It means sharing a problem or a question with a wider community of people to get their ideas. For example, Topshop are looking to break into the wearable tech industry. To tackle the challenge, they started TopPitch , a competition for startups to develop a wearable-tech product that is stylish, functional, affordable, and fits their brand. The winners get to sell their product through Topshop. This is just one example of how we can develop new ideas by working together with new people.

Skip to 3 minutes and 16 secondsAnd that's how innovation happens. All of that is possible because of collaboration tools, for example Skype or Facebook, for companies. And ultimately because of the internet and the connections it enables.

Working smarter with digital

Digital technologies are helping us to be smarter both in how we perform tasks at work, and in how we work with other people.

In this video, we will take a closer look at how we can leverage both people and machines in our networks to help us work more efficiently, come up with better ideas, and solve more complex problems.

Let us know some examples of how companies or people can work smarter through using digital technologies and solutions in the comments below. This could either be examples that you’ve heard about in the media, or your own ideas.

Have a look at the article below (under ‘See also’) to read more about the difference between Artificial Intelligence and machines augmenting the way we work, also called Intelligence Augmentation.
